Shelley Jacks
This page is all about Shelley
Jacks, not just for the MGA, but for any vehicle that used one. Many of the photos and comments have been
gleaned from Ebay and other sites. I would be pleased to add photos and
comments from anyone who has information on these jacks.

Please note that this information is accurate to the best of my knowledge, but I make no claims about authority on this subject. Use your own discretion when evaluating the accuracy of the information.
It seems that Shelley changed their product marking during the 1950s from 'DL' to 'LJ'. For some jacks this occurred in 1951/1952, but with others such as the 12DL the changeover to the LJ22 was as late as 1957.
The values are normally taken from auction sites world-wide, but exclude postage.
See here for how a jack in average condition can easily be brought back to life. Jack refurbishment
I am planning on adding detailed information on the various types of Shelley jack handles and which jacks had which type. If you have any photos and information please contact me.

Shelley 7DL The jack measures 6.5" retracted and 14.5" extended. It has either an L-shaped or saddle jacking point, rectangular base with rounded corners and a 1/2" square handle socket. The 7DL was supplied with the Morris 8 from Chassis Number 59457-61000 and also 61352 onwards, fitting most series 1 and all series 2. The jack with the L-shaped jacking point may have been supplied with the AC Ace and Acceca (unconfirmed) but was definitely never part of the AC Cobra toolkit (see LJ22). Indeed, the L-shape jacking point will not fit the AC Cobra. The L-shaped version was re-badged in the early 1950s (probably around 1952) as the LJ21 and supplied with the Austin Healey 100-4 BN2, the 100/6 and early 3000s. I have no information on the jack with the saddle jacking point. The jack is also claimed by an Ebay seller to be an original item on early Land Rover Series 1, Series 2 and Willys Jeeps (see also LJ263). Shelley 12DL
The jack comes with either an L-shaped, saddle or flat jacking point. The 'L' jack was supplied with the Austin 10. It measures 5.5 inches closed and 11.75 inches extended. It is possible that a small number of this jack may have been supplied with early AC Cobras. However, other research suggests that all Cobras were supplied with the LJ22 which is a relabelled 12DL. (LJ22 information courtesy of Eara Merritt). The jack was rebadged as the LJ22 in the 1950s, around 1957. Year Dates Noted: 1936, 1937, 1938, 1945, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957 Value: £32.00 paid on UK Ebay 21 November 2008 £266.00 on US Ebay 15 December 2008 £41.05 paid on UK Ebay 23 February 2009 £20.87 paid on UK Ebay 6 March 2009 £26.82 paid on UK Ebay 8 May 2009 £62.27 paid on UK Ebay 21 October 2009 £21.00 paid on UK Ebay 26 October 2009 £28.52 paid on UK Ebay 25 January 2010 £45.96 paid on USA Ebay 02 February 2010 £23.01 paid on UK Ebay 28 February 2010 £19.99 paid on UK Ebay 2 May 2010 £52.00 paid on UK Ebay 18 June 2010 £18.00 paid on UK Ebay 12 September 2010 £16.01 paid on UK Ebay 12 September 2010 £8.51 paid on UK Ebay 26 September 2010 £558.12 paid on USA Ebay 17 October 2010 (I think someone paid over the odds!!) £28.78 paid on UK Ebay 28 November 2010 £5.99 paid on UK Ebay 11 December 2010 £36.97 paid on UK Ebay 10 February 2011 £21.57 paid on Aus Ebay 18 February 2011 £19.99 paid on UK Ebay 18 April 2011 £27.00 paid on UK Ebay 1 May 2011 £34.00 paid on UK Ebay 8 June 2011 £36.99 paid on UK Ebay 13 June 2011 £17.99 paid on UK Ebay 9 July 2011 £16.00 paid on UK Ebay 15 August 2011 £60.00 paid on UK Ebay 28 August 2011 £5.50 paid on UK Ebay 13 October 2011 £28.00 paid on UK Ebay 15 January 2012 £89.00 paid on UK Ebay 29 January 2012 £82.00 paid on UK Ebay 5 February 2012 £34.88 paid on UK Ebay 15 February 2012 £33.62 paid on Australia Ebay 18 March 2012 £33.57 paid on UK Ebay 24 March 2012 £83.00 paid on UK Ebay 15 April 2012 £17.89 paid on UK Ebay 16 April 2012

It is identical to the 7DL, having the name changed to LJ21 in the early 1950s, probably 1952. Packaging recently discovered on a NOS jack showed that the LJ21 may have been supplied with, or was suitable for, the following cars: BMC Minor range 1100 - 1300, Bedford Beagle, Bond Equipe, Ford Escort Anglia, Cortina, Thames, Capri, Corsair, Lotus Elan Plus 2, Morgan Plus 8, Reliant Scimitar, Rootes Minx GT, Triumph Herald 1300, GT6, Vauxhall Viva, Victor. Shelley LJ22 The jack has either an L-shaped or saddle jacking point. The two photos with the saddle jacking point are an original unrestored LJ22 and a restored 12DL jack, both from 289 AC Cobras . The 12DL is in plentiful supply and identical to the LJ22 in appearance, except for the numbers. The LJ22 variant with the saddle jacking point was the only Shelley jack to be supplied with the AC Cobra. The saddle jacking point fits the Cobra tubular chassis, whereas the L-shaped jack will not. Note the small crossbar hole showing on the unrestored LJ22 jack handle. The 12DL handle will have a broomstick size crossbar hole. (This data is gleaned from research into original unrestored Cobras, including both the 289 and 427. The photos and the data were supplied by Eara Merritt.) Year Dates Noted:

Shelley IG 30? The jack measures 6.5 inches high retracted and 14 inches extended. It is a 3-stage jack. It looks very similar to the LJ25C above in all other details. However, unlike all LJ-series jacks, this one has no identification numbering and lettering on the opposite side of the central barrel to the SHELLEY lettering. Shelley LJ31 The jack measures 5.25 inches retracted and 13.75 inches extended. It has a 3/4" square drive. The LJ31 is a 3-stage jack. It was used by the Morris GPO Van. Shelley LJ225 The Shelley LJ225 was supplied in numerous variations and appears to cause confusion with restorers. This version was supplied in the toolkits of Austin Healey 3000 BT7, BN7 and BJ7 twin carburettor cars and through to the tri-carburettor cars from about June 1960 to early BJ8 production. The the change point to a similar jack with reinforced yoke is not known for certain, but claimed by one Ebay seller to be 1965. The LJ225 was never supplied with the Healey 100-6 nor the 3000 Mk1 - see LJ21. This version was also supplied in the toolkit of MGA Deluxe, 1600, and 1600 Mark II from July of 1960 (car number 93548) to the end of production. Recent information (August 2011) suggests that this jack may also have been supplied with Mini Pick-ups and Minivans. Confirmatory information required. It is marked "SHELLEY LJ 225" on one side, CA265 DH Prov Pat" on the other side, and "CA259" cast into the top yoke. There is some difference of opinion about the handle supplied with this jack. The "Original MGA" by Clausager page 34 and Anderson/ Moment "Austin Healey Restoration Guide" page 133 say the handle was a 12" round bar and painted black. Barney Gaylord notes on his MGA site that the handle was 13" long to a 45 degree bend, then another 1.5" of bar. Shelley LJ225 This LJ225 has the reinforcing collar around the jack handle hole as mentioned in the narrative 2 above. It carries the serial CA311 on the yoke. The jack handle is 18 inches long and 1/2 inch diameter. According to the Austin-Healey Concours Originality Guide, it is appropriate for all 3000 Mark III (series BJ8). There is no data to support this version ever being supplied with the MGA 1600. The first 2 photographs were supplied by Healey owner John McElrath. The jack shows its original paint, being unrestored. Dave Breneman supplied the 3rd photo showing the original box, carrying the part number AHH 5986. Year Dates Noted:

Shelley LJ225 This LJ225 version is the only Shelley jack variant that was supplied with the E-Type Jaguar. It is marked LJ22501 and was always painted grey as shown in the photo. It is a 3 stage screw jack, unlike all other LJ225 variants which are 2-stage. It also has the strengthening gusset between the ratchet pin and the handle hole. This jack was supplied with the first 4972 E-Types as follows:- Right Hand Drive OTS: 850001 to 850548. Left Hand Drive OTS: 875001 to 877518. Right hand Drive FHC: 860001 to 860660. Left Hand Drive FHC: 885001 to 886246. After that all E-Types were supplied with a scissor jack made by METALLIFACTURE. For completeness, a picture is shown here. Shelley LJ225 This Shelley LJ225 Jack appears to be an adaption of the CA311 version (2 above) to suit an E-Type Jaguar. No E-Type was ever issued with this version. As can be seen in the photo there are traces of red paint under the grey, also suggesting it is an altered jack. Photo courtesy Ivan Ruiz . Year Dates Noted:

Shelley LJ225 Not sure what car used this LJ225 version. An Austin Healey concours expert advises me that It was not supplied with the big Austin Healey. Also, MGA experts say it was not supplied with the MGA. This version will not fit under either car with a deflated tyre due to the excess height of the extension when fully retracted, as shown in the photo. It does not have a serial number on the yoke. This jack continues to achieve good prices on Ebay, probably through mistaken identity and incorrect advertising.
